This bhajan is one of my favorites on the CD Sounds of the Heart. I can’t just listen to it; I always have to sing along and even dance to it when I’m at home. I am so grateful to Gurumayi for creating such a beautiful melody. Gurumayi’s singing touches my heart. I feel my heart open wider and wider to feel more—and even more—love.

While there is so much symbolism in these artistic representations—the hazy sun, the vastness of the river, the fullness of the foliage, and the still majesty of the mountains—it is the pure tender love between Hanuman and Lord Rama in the first image and the devotion in the second image that touch my soul. To me, they depict the depth of Tulsidas’s understanding, love, and yearning to also have such a “flame of devotion” in his heart.
This bhajan cries out to me with an observation of the overwhelming magnanimity of Lord Rama that he never gives up on absolving misdeeds and “destroying the sorrows of this world.” He is the epitome of patience and the purest love. No wonder Hanuman and Tulsidas express such devotion. I find the depth of this love overwhelming and very humbling.

While I hear this bhajan full of yearning, compassion, and love, my eyes rest on this amazing image of Rama and Hanuman, which is so alive and pure. Their love is so present. I adore Hanuman’s tenderness, his blissful gaze immersed in the Self, and his soft, silky white fur. I consider this oneness of Master and devotee as the peak of all.
Again I see the interwoven colors of blue and gold. I mentally braid a rakhi. It is made of all the pairs of opposites that are in my mind. Then they look like they are embracing each other, as together they make one bracelet. Inwardly, I offer it to my Guru’s feet.
I feel so much gratitude for my Guru’s protection.
