Mai Bagiyana Se

A Bhajan by Mirabai

Sung by Viju Kulkarni

Mai Bagiyana Se

The bhajans and poetry of Mirabai are suffused with devotion to her beloved Lord Krishna. Once awakened to her love for Krishna, Mirabai dedicated every moment of her life to the worship of her Lord. Forsaking her role as a princess, she became a wandering mystic so that she was free in every moment to express her love for Krishna, whom she addressed as Hari.

In this exquisite bhajan, Mai Bagiyana Se, Mirabai delights in the many ways she will worship her beloved Hari. She will awaken him at dawn with sweet hymns, adorn him with fresh flowers, offer food to him, and wave a fan to cool him in the heat.

Mirabai teaches us, through the ecstasy of her devotion, to identify with the Divine. She becomes so immersed in the Lord that she experiences Hari in every pore of her being. She is aware of the Lord in everything, from her own voice to the breath that sustains and protects even the most vulnerable beings. The poet-saint demonstrates that through devotion, parabhakti, we can experience darshan, the presence of the Lord within ourselves and in all.

The words and meaning of this bhajan take me deep inside, where I experience God’s love. The hymn’s melody and the sound of Viju’s voice evoke great devotion and surrender. This touches my heart.

    Udhana, India

As I read the words to this bhajan, I could feel Mirabai’s sincere and personal love for Lord Hari. Viju’s melodious voice singing this beautiful composition evoked in me compassion and devotion.

This bhajan sung by Viju Kulkarni transports me back to Gurudev Siddha Peeth many years ago. I remember Sunday mornings in the courtyard, when Viju’s devotional singing evoked in me longing and love for the Lord. That love and that longing still reverberate in my heart when I hear this sweet melody.

As I read the English translation of Mirabai’s bhajan, I am taken back to my childhood, when my two siblings and I would go outside with our grandmother, picking flowers that were blooming in her garden. My grandmother would then take these flowers, share them with others, and, like Mirabai, “offer them at the Lord’s feet” at our local temple.

Now that I am older, I understand what my grandmother instilled into us. I will always cherish this loving memory of her, and I too will offer flowers to the Lord with the love and devotion she demonstrated to us.

I am grateful for this bhajan on the Siddha Yoga path website—a powerful reaffirmation of our innate divinity and a support for my sadhana.

As I listened to the musicians perform Mirabai’s exquisite bhajan, I paid attention to the variation in the music. To my ear, the refrain was light and simple, whereas the verses were more challenging for me to follow. Reflecting on this, I understood how seeing the presence of the divine in all things is essential, but can be challenging at times. I realized that as challenging as sadhana can be, when I remain steady on the path, I too can offer devotion at the Lord’s feet.

I felt such love and devotion listening to this bhajan. As I followed along with the English translation, I felt my own heart singing and I wished I could keep singing these words throughout my day. I felt that Mirabai’s focus is the true focus of my sadhana—keeping my attention on the Lord.

I am so grateful for the ways my Guru’s grace keeps my longing to serve God alive inside me.

My heart filled with the love of the Lord as I read Mirabai’s poem. I feel kinship with her as she describes how each morning she invokes the Lord through her devotional singing. Each morning when I wake, I fill my mind with the sweet sounds of the Shiva Arati, awakening the Lord within and setting the stage for morning meditation.

As Mirabai sings, I feel I too behold the Lord’s beautiful form.

Every morning I greet the day
    Every day a gift
    Of time
    Of God
    Pranams and songs
    Flame waving
    Dakshina sparkling
Oh! My Master is the sweetest.

    Delightful
    A drumbeat
    A pulse beneath the feet
    Cymbals tinkling, tickling
    Heart rising
    Gurumayi inside the practices
    Gurumayi inside the body
    Gurumayi inside mind and heart.

Every morning I greet the day
Hello, friend! Hello, family! Hello, love!
Without shaktipat, who would greet this day?
    Surya’s horses at the gate!
Every morning I greet the day.
