Golden Anniversary
Siddha Yoga Satsang in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of
Shri Guru Gita Recitation

January 3, 2022

Dear reader,

Happy New Year!

Just a couple of days ago, on January 1, we were blessed to participate in Sweet Surprise and receive Gurumayi Chidvilasananda’s Message for 2022. And today, I want to share with you that we will continue to ride the wave of the shakti by participating in another Siddha Yoga satsang.

It was on January 7, 1972, that Baba Muktananda established the morning recitation of Shri Guru Gita as part of the Ashram Daily Schedule. This was a pivotal moment in the lives of seekers on the Siddha Yoga path—and an incredibly exciting one, too. The regular study and recitation of Shri Guru Gita transformed everyone’s understanding of who the Guru is.

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary—the golden anniversary—of the recitation of Shri Guru Gita on the Siddha Yoga path. I know that many of you have a longstanding practice of reciting Shri Guru Gita; your copy of Shri Guru Gita may have even become one of your most cherished belongings. Others of you may have more recently discovered your connection to Shri Guru Gita and your love of reciting it. For all of us who have benefited from reciting these sacred mantras and who have come to understand the power of our recitation and its fruits, this is a most meaningful and joyous anniversary to celebrate.

I am very pleased, therefore, to invite you to honor this golden anniversary by participating in Siddha Yoga satsang. During the satsang, we will be reciting Shri Guru Gita together. When we collectively recite Shri Guru Gita, the power of our recitation is amplified; the fruits of our recitation become that much more manifest and manifold.

The satsang will begin at 10:00 a.m. EST on Friday, January 7, and it will be held via live video stream on the Siddha Yoga path website. For those of you who are unable to participate at this time, the satsang will be available on the website for a few days afterward.

With warm regards,

In 1987, after spending years living in and around the Siddha Yoga Ashrams in Santa Monica and Oakland, I was guided to return to my place of birth in Kansas. I did not know how I was going to thrive in this land of my old life. On the airplane to Kansas, I asked the Guru inwardly, “How am I going to do this?” Immediately I heard, “Chant the Guru Gita.”

Shri Guru Gita has been a staple in my home all these years. It is as though the Ashram came back to Kansas with me in the form of Shri Guru Gita, and words cannot express my gratitude for this ancient and timeless practice.

This invitation to the “Golden Anniversary” Siddha Yoga Satsang evoked vivid memories of the first time I recited Shri Guru Gita. At the beginning of my sadhana, I tried to recite it at the local meditation center but the shakti was too strong for me. Since reciting Shri Guru Gita is a fundamental Siddha Yoga practice, I didn’t know what to do.

One day, I heard a CD of Baba’s solo recitation of Shri Guru Gita. Listening to him felt so comforting! So I prayed, “Baba, would you please recite Shri Guru Gita for me, every day, until I can join in?” I would listen to Baba’s soft voice and deep devotion while reading along in the text. One year later, I sat to recite my first Shri Guru Gita with Baba and I found I could pronounce it quite easily. It was amazing!

With great compassion and patience, Baba taught me to recite Shri Guru Gita and to enjoy it from head to toe with great delight.

My absolute favorite memory of my time at Shree Muktananda Ashram is that of sitting and reciting Shri Guru Gita with Gurumayi. These recitations are forever implanted into my very being. Shri Guru Gita purifies the one who recites it, until all that is left is inner joy and pure laughter.

Reciting Shri Guru Gita gives me a true, pure, and blissful connection to Gurumayi, to Baba Muktananda, and to Bhagavan Nityananda.

When I read in this gorgeous “Golden Anniversary” invitation about Baba Muktananda’s introduction of the recitation of Shri Guru Gita into the Ashram Daily Schedule fifty years ago, I remembered my own introduction to this practice.

It was thirty-five years ago, and I immediately felt like I’d come home. My heart and soul felt nourished. Over the years since then, my relationship with Shri Guru Gita has unfolded and grown. Now I couldn’t imagine my life without its precious shakti guiding me.

I will be very happy to participate in the “Siddha Yoga Satsang in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of Shri Guru Gita Recitation.”
Since I studied the six disciplines or aspects of svadhyaya taught by Swami Akhandananda in the Svadhyaya Study Sessions on the Siddha Yoga path website, I have been reciting Shri Guru Gita with a renewed focus. I even carry my svadhyaya book with me while traveling so that I can continue to practice svadhyaya and reap its tremendous benefits.

I am so grateful to Baba Muktananda and to Shri Gurumayi for giving me the prasad of Shri Guru Gita. It always protects me and helps me to experience my true Self.

I’ve been reciting Shri Guru Gita on a regular basis for the last three years, and it’s one of my favorite Siddha Yoga practices. I have been able to deepen my experience of this practice through the beautiful Svadhyaya Study Sessions with Swami Akhandananda on the Siddha Yoga path website. They have taught me to be focused on every aspect of the recitation. This in turn has helped me to be more focused in my life.

The meditation that follows the recitation of Shri Guru Gita is usually so profound and full of peace and love for me that I never want it to end. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to recite this blessed sacred text with other Siddha Yoga students in the Universal Hall.

I am grateful for this wonderful invitation to recite Shri Guru Gita. While I’m not able to pronounce everything perfectly, I feel strongly connected to the inner energy when I focus deeply and do my best. Often just listening to the recitation of Shri Guru Gita makes me feel that I am connected to the Guru and that everything is OK.

Reading this invitation to recite Shri Guru Gita just had me jumping for joy! I love Shri Guru Gita because it connects me directly to my shakti. After meditating and reciting this magnificent sacred text, I feel like I can do and conquer anything. My chanting book from many years ago is a cherished treasure of my love for God.

Receiving this invitation reminded me that Carlos del Cueto was one of our teachers in the Premotsava music training for young people, now nearly twenty years ago. We learned to recite Shri Guru Gita consciously, focusing on all details of the text and music, from start to finish. We learned that by intensely focusing on what is happening now, we get drawn into the present, and that reciting Shri Guru Gita therefore can become our doorway to the present moment.

Now, almost twenty years later, I still feel connected to all participants who were there, blending our voices together, day after day after day, for many weeks.

What joy! I have missed chanting with others in the sangham and look forward to joining our hearts and voices in this way. I know it will be a showering of grace.
